SPECIAL CITY COUNCIL MEETING
Mayor Rohde called the June 24, 2026 City Council Meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. The meeting was held in the Tremonton City Council Meeting Room at 102 South Tremont Street, Tremonton, Utah. Those in attendance were Mayor Rohde, Councilmembers Bowcutt, Jex, Lewis, and Westergard, City Manager Nessen, and City Recorder Nelson. Also in attendance was Fire Chief Jeff Jarrow.
1. Approval of Agenda:
Motion by Councilmember Oyler to approve the agenda of June 24, 2026. Motion seconded by Councilmembers Bowcutt & Lewis. Vote: Councilmember Bowcutt – yes, Councilmember Jex – yes, Councilmember Lewis – yes, Councilmember Oyler – yes, Councilmember Westergard – yes. Motion approved.
2. Discussion and approval of ORD 26-08 adopting restrictions on the use of Fireworks within certain areas in Tremonton City
Chief Jarrow noted the northern part of Utah is in Stage 1 fire restrictions. It is unfortunate to think about restricting fireworks because it is the 250th anniversary of America’s independence, but we need to look at restricting fireworks along the Malad River and on Radio Hill. This would keep fireworks centrally located in the city and keep the fire crew close to town. There have been over 256 man caused wildfires this season and it has just started. There have been 50 naturally caused fires. The City needs to reassess this each year if there are hazardous conditions. We can only restrict it to areas that are hazardous. Chief Jarrow said we can discuss this every June and reassess. Manager Nessen suggested the council pass the ordinance restricting fireworks in certain areas but use social media to encourage resident not to do fireworks this year. Councilmember Westergard noted that people are financially responsible for starting a fire.
There was discussion about expanding the area to include the area to the west of I-84, but that is in the county and their regulations would govern that. They talked about having a designated area for people in restricted areas to come set off fireworks, but it didn’t work well for other cities that did that in the past. Chief Jarrow said there has been a new fire in our area everyday this week. There are new fires coming up all over and the air is getting hazy. When the fire department does inspections on firework stations, they will share the map showing the restricted areas.
Motion by Councilmember Jex to approve ORD 26-08. Motion seconded by Councilmember Bowcutt. Vote: Councilmember Bowcutt – yes, Councilmember Jex – yes, Councilmember Lewis – yes, Councilmember Oyler – yes, Councilmember Westergard – yes. Motion approved.
3. Adjournment.
Motion by Councilmember Lewis to adjourn the meeting. Motion seconded by consensus of the Council. Vote: Councilmember Bowcutt – yes, Councilmember Jex – yes, Councilmember Lewis – yes, Councilmember Oyler – yes, Councilmember Westergard – yes. Motion approved.
The meeting adjourned at 4:16 p.m.
