BOARD MEETING
April 18, 2018

The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Linda James at 7:07 p.m. The meeting was held in the Tremonton City Library at 210 North Tremont Street, Tremonton, Utah. Those in attendance were Tremonton Library Director Kim Griffiths, Chairperson Linda James, Vice Chairperson Carol Jones, Board Members Nancy Bills, Annette Macfarlane, Librarian-Secretary Rebecca Jeppesen, and Terrel Shumway.

1. Welcome

Chairperson James opened the meeting and asked Terrel Shumway to introduce himself.

2. Approval of Agenda

Motion by Board Member Macfarlane to approve the Agenda. Vice Chairperson Jones seconded the motion. Vote: Chairperson James – aye, Vice Chairperson Jones – aye, Board Member Bills – aye, Board Member Macfarlane – aye. The motion carried.

3. Approval of Minutes from January 9, 2018

Motion by Board Member Bills to approve the Minutes of January 9, 2018. Vice Chairperson Jones seconded the motion. Vote: Chairperson James – aye, Vice Chairperson Jones – aye, Board Member Bills – aye, Board Member Macfarlane – aye. The motion carried.

4. Public comments: This is an opportunity to address the Library Board regarding your concerns or ideas. Please limit your comments to three minutes.

There were no public comments.

5. New Business

a. Introduce and Approve Possible New Board Members

Terrel Shumway and Moroni Aguilar have volunteered to serve on the Tremonton City Library Board.

Motion by Board Member Bills to approve Terrel Shumway and Moroni Aguilar as new board members. Board Member Macfarlane seconded the motion. Vote: Chairperson James – aye, Vice Chairperson Jones – aye, Board Member Bills – aye, Board Member Macfarlane – aye. The motion carried.

Their names will be submitted to the Tremonton City Council for approval.

b. Board Position Nominations

Vice Chairperson Carol Jones will start her two-year term as the Tremonton Library Board Chairperson starting July 1, 2018.

Motion by Board Member Macfarlane to nominate Board Member Bills to serve as the Library Board Secretary. Terrell Shumway seconded the motion. Vote: Chairperson James – aye, Vice Chairperson Jones – aye, Board Member Bills – aye, Board Member Macfarlane – aye. The motion carried.

Motion by Board Member Bills to nominate Board Member Wood to serve as the Library Board Vice Chairperson. Vice Chairperson Jones seconded the motion. Vote: Chairperson James – aye, Vice Chairperson Jones – aye, Board Member Bills – aye, Board Member Macfarlane – aye. The motion carried.

6. Unfinished Business

a. Discuss Summer Reading Kickoff Party

The Summer Reading Kickoff Party is scheduled on June 4, from 5 – 7 p.m. in the Tremonton Library Park. Garland City Library is planning to provide a music video game called Rock Band and will host an 801 Rocks activity where participants paint rocks with designs and messages and hide them in public places for people to find. Tremonton Librarian Janelle Esplin has planned fun children crafts, including harmonicas, squawking cups, CD art, and ribbon bracelets to dance with. Croney’s Music Garden will do music and movement activities with the children. The teens still want to do karaoke. Moroni Aguilar has arranged for two food vendor trucks and a balloon booth. Tremonton Librarian Debby Carter has scheduled book authors to meet at the party. Tremonton Librarian Gina Kinikin will draw up a map of activity centers. Lawn games, including hula hoops to music, will also be set up. Board Member Bills has a beanbag and ring toss game that can be used. She also suggested a pop bottle or can ring toss, with pop rocks candy prizes. Board Member Bills will research stencils to facilitate a quick and efficient face-painting booth. Board Members James and Jones volunteered to help out with activities at the Summer Reading Kickoff Party; Board Member Macfarlane will check her calendar to see if she might be able to help. There will not be any final parties at the end of the summer. Instead, the money saved will be spent on prizes and reading incentives. Children and teen participants will design their own avatars online.

7. Board Reports

a. Library Director’s Report

In January, 31 teens enjoyed a Harry Potter Mystery Dinner, 39 children participated in a Snowman Search, and 42 individuals attended a “Princesses Rock Party.” In February, 25 people baked and decorated Valentine’s Sugar Cookies, 16 teens participated in an “Escape the Library” activity, 24 individuals attended the “Superheroes Rock Party,” and 53 children found hearts hidden around the library. In March, 23 teens participated in “Tech Night” activities, 8 adults attended an Olive Garden “Zuppa Toscana Soup” class, 27 children searched for Shamrocks hidden around the library, and 141 children searched for paper Easter eggs. In April, 15 individuals participated at a family game night.

9. Adjournment

Motion by Board Member Macfarlane to adjourn the meeting. Board Member Bills seconded the motion. Vote: Chairperson James – aye, Vice Chairperson Jones – aye, Board Member Bills – aye, Board Member Macfarlane – aye. The motion carried.
