As part of our ongoing commitment to emergency preparedness, we would like everyone to participate in the Great Utah Shake Out on Thursday, April 17th at 10:15 AM. This annual statewide earthquake drill is an excellent opportunity for each of us to practice how to stay safe during an earthquake and to evaluate our readiness both at work and at home.

Here’s how to participate:

  • Set a reminder or alarm on your phone or calendar for 10:15 AM on April 17th.
  • At that time, take a moment to pause your normal work activities and imagine that a significant earthquake has just occurred.
  • Assess your current surroundings: Are there hazards nearby that could fall or shift? Are you in a safe position?
  • Practice the recommended safety action:
    Drop, Cover, and Hold On

    • Drop to your hands and knees.
    • Cover your head and neck under a sturdy desk or table if available.
    • Hold On until the shaking would stop.
Taking these simple actions during a drill can help us respond more effectively in a real event.

At Home & Work: Strengthen Your Space

  • Secure bookshelves, cabinets, and heavy furniture to the wall to prevent tipping.
  • Move heavy or breakable items to lower shelves.
  • Ensure TVs, monitors, and electronics are properly anchored.
  • Identify safe spots in each room—under sturdy tables or against interior walls away from windows.
  • Keep hallways and exits clear for quick evacuation.

Emergency Kits & Supplies

  • Assemble a 72-hour emergency kit for home, work, and your vehicle.
  • Include non-perishable food, water, first aid, flashlight, batteries, medications, clothing, hygiene items, and cash.
  • Keep copies of important documents (ID, insurance, medical records) in a waterproof container or digitally accessible.
  • Don’t forget pet supplies if you have animals in your household.

Communication & Planning

  • Establish a family emergency plan, including a designated meeting location and out-of-area emergency contact.
  • Practice texting during emergencies—phone lines may be overloaded, but texts often get through.
  • Make sure all family members know how to shut off gas, water, and electricity at home if needed.

Workplace Readiness

  • Know your department’s emergency response procedures and evacuation routes.
  • Know your role during an emergency at work.
  • Keep a personal go-bag under your desk with basic essentials.
  • Participate in all city emergency drills and safety briefings.
